Whether viruses, Trojans or spyware: malware attacks computer systems and endangers the security of personal data. A few simple rules help to better protect against unwanted access:

  1. Choose passwords with at least 12 digits. Long passwords are more difficult to crack because the number of possible password combinations multiplies with each digit. Special characters are less important than the length of the password.
  2. Choose a separate password for each platform. If a password is still cracked, only one login is affected. Password managers make administration easier.
  3. Where possible, activate double authentication with password and SMS code.
  4. Only open emails from trustworthy senders. If you still open a dubious mail: Do not click on any links and delete the e-mail immediately.
  5. Never share personal information such as account or credit card numbers via email.
  6. Use a trusted mail provider. Send sensitive data only encrypted.
  7. Keep your operating system up to date. Always use the latest software version. Outdated programs have larger security holes that hackers can exploit for attacks.
  8. Enable a firewall to block threats.
  9. Use a virus scanner to remove threats.
  10. Use adblockers to protect yourself from viruses caused by supposed advertisements.
  11. Do not surf via public WLAN routers (unencrypted wireless networks).
  12. Do not use user accounts (accounts) with administrator rights in your daily work. By doing so, you limit any risks from viruses.
  13. Install only programs from trusted sources.
